I had one tree with a lot of red-tinted fruit, but it was the one that died back. They seem to tolerate light fall frosts well. They red up nicely if allowed to stay on the tree into late October.

I would suspect leaving just the king apple would be the bestplan, but I usually leave the king, and another. They tend to over set, and so, to get large apples, they must be thinned A LOT. They will keep in a cool garage until March. Unfortunately, they seem to only have a crop every other year. I have had frosts as late as June 6th out here on the prairie. They are a late bloomer, which makes them one of the only trees in my orchard to ever produce fruit. They are fairly easy to grow, or must be since they grow here, and nothing else does. I especially like the ones that have a lot of red veining inside they will turn a pie pink. As a cooking apple, their flavor is like roses and they are solid and non-juicy, so pies and baked goods don't become soggy. They are good to eat only right after they are picked, but will get dry and mealy soon after.

I first purchased them in the grocery store in Hawaii, because they were brought in from New Zealand. Grimes and Stayman, which also are produced in this section, are showing tip well both as to size and quality.Romes are my favorite apple for cooking. This district will have some extra good crops to offer this season. However, in the Gallia, Jackson, and Meigs county districts, which were light last year, prospects are for a good average yield and although some scab damage has shown up we will have quite a nice crop. There is again quite heavy damage from worms but growers are getting them pretty well under control and are expecting much better quality than last year.
